TransAfrica 1975: Crossing the Sahara – Part 1

After the Atlas Mountains it was time to cross the Sahara Desert. The first part of this leg of the journey, to Ain Salah, was relatively straightforward as there was a tarmac road to follow for much of the time although there were patches of soft, dusty sand. This made it an interesting drive:

Transit stuck for the first time in Morroco: About 1st April 1975
Sunset (reflected in the Land Rover) near Beni Abbes: 2nd April 1975
Coming down of the Plateu du Tademail with the Transit and Land Rover: 4th April 1975
Camping at Ain Salah: 4th-6th April 1975

Whenever we saw the remains of a vehicle by the roadside we always stopped to investigate. But, as you might expect, there was nothing left to salvage:

On the way to Tadjement, looking for parts. Transit and Land Rover by the Roadside: 7th April 1975
The Land Rover and Transit on the way to Tadjement, further down the road: 7th April 1975
Roadside camping just before Arak: 7th April 1975

I remember distinctly that evening by the camp fire. It was dark as you might expect being in the middle of nowhere but the stars were amazing (no light pollution!). We were camping with another couple in a VW combi and they had a luminous Frisbee. We were throwing it to each other just by the sound of the voices – it was too dark to see – but the Frisbee just glowed green as it hovered through the air. An amazing experience.
