Last week we had another meeting of the RPS-eCircle group that I belong to. The photograph that we all used to process was of a beach scene and was submitted by one of the members (Suzy). I have her permission to use the photograph in this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried different techniques to get the type of image that I wanted -a poster type print that is often seen on old railway posters and some books from the 1930s. I have a book by the artist Brian Cooke showing many of his paintings from the 1930s. Below I show some of the stages I went through starting with the original image:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image was cropped to a letter-box shape and had some basic adjustments made<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

First attempt at posterisation – Too much detail in the sea and beach but the sky is not too bad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Second attempt at posterisation after reducing the level of detail on the photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the above image I was able to reduce the level of detail removing the graininess in the image leaving larger areas of flat colour. But I wasn’t happy with the colours nor that there was still some grainy areas on the beach. So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This version has some of the graininess removed and the colours of the beach and sea adjusted<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The above is closer to what I was trying to achieve. But I experimented further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a black-and-white conversion of the previous image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

You may also (depending on your screen) see a small measure of texture brought into the beach and sea in the above image. For the final version below I have included a ‘border’ around the different colours to better reflect what some of the original artists show in their artwork:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
