From the Sahara Desert we travelled through Niger to Nigeria where we stayed mostly in Kano on a camping site although we did venture out for one circular trip. For some reason we seemed to have stuck in Kano from 27th April to 16th May, then off on a circular tour returning to Kano on the 21st May until 24th May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of these photos are Black and White – these were taken for a local paper (they gave me a few rolls of film for this) some of which were published (see the last image). But most were my colour slides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the camp site there were always lots of people trying to sell us stuff. Some we got to know quite well such as a lad of about 8 years old. We were told he was an orphan from the civil war. He was extremely bright; he could speak fluently several European languages as well as a couple of local ones. His name was Sunday and he sold bananas. So, inevitably, he was known as Banana Sunday!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following photo, that is me standing my the Land Rover. I have no idea what I was doing, but I was in need of a hair cut!<\/p>\n\n\n

Unfortunately, we didn’t see much wildlife at Yankari – much of what we did see was too far away. The best was a couple of baboons on a rubbish heap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We returned to Kano for a few days before moving on. This shows one of the desert storms that blew in. As we had experienced these before we tried to warn others one was on its way. No-one believed us until it struck:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this photo you can see a couple of trucks from the commercial tour companies such as ‘Encounter Overland’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This final image is a scan from my scrapbook showing the article and photos published in my local paper, the ‘Basildon Standard Recorder’ on 23rd May 1975:<\/p>\n\n\n
